My dice collections

Just post'n about my dice "collection". I don't really *collect* dice. Not like I do with baseball cards, but.... I do love them, so I'm sharing.

First things first - How do I catalog/describe my dice? I have broken up my collection of dice into 7 dice types, 4 dice functions types, and 4 dice displays types:
Dice Base Types:

4d=   4 sided

6d=   6 sided

8d=   8 sided

10d= 10 sided

10dT= 10 base 10 sided

12d = 12 sided

20d = 20 sided

Dice function types:

N= number

C= compass

B= body

S= situation

Dice display types:

Top or vertical aligned 1=

Bottom, horizontal, and/or underscored. 2=

Pip-scored 3=

Pip only numbers 4=

Topps 1962 Cubs cards

In 1962, Topp's design philosophy changed.  Changed in a way that would affect Topps for the next 30 years.  Topps wanted to create a card with the charm that Bowman and Topps had at times in the 50`s.  In 1962 Topps, gave us the wood grain design.

Specifically, the card's vertical color photo looked like a poster pasted to a wood grain board. The set features 598 standard size cards.

The biggest complaint that collectors have are the dark colors make damage show easily.  The second biggest complaint? Quality control was HORRIBLE!  I'm hardly the first person to write this. In the attempt to make better looking card with better posed players, everything else went out the window.

For example, four different cards were circulating with the same card number. Not only that, cards were not consistent on what they portrayed of the player. Many dual-pose cards were circulated. On a couple famous cards, the player's team logo appeared on his cap; sometimes it didn't. On other cards, the cap was missing entirely. There is a card were the ground behind the player is green, and on another card it is dirt. It's like they became aware of editing images and took it too far. Of course pre-photo-shop-era. I'm not aware of any of these issues though with Cubs cards.


I know over the years I have a lot of criticism for Topps. For very good reasons I believe. I still don't even believe that they deserve to be MLB's sole baseball card company. But Overall, the photo quality of poses in 1962 are much, much, better than the Topps 1961 series.  The card design went on to inspire the Topps 1987 lighter wood grain cards.

1961 Topps Cubs Cards

With my newest post, I'm moving on to the next year with Topps 1961 Cards.

In 1961, Topps changed it up considerably with a much simpler card. Specifically, Topps went to a vertical design and one photo per player. The set consists of 587 cards.  It has a large color photograph of the player on each card's front, with the player's name and team printed across the bottom.  The text is much simpler, but the card still have a very boxy layout and use alternating colors like the 1960 set.  The quality of some of the photos are horrible.  If they are photo quality, half have the players are staring off in some odd direction. 1960 Topps cards were ugly also, but they had effort put into them and they were fun.  1961 cards lack those two qualities. The best of this set is that it contains Cubs rookies, Ron Santo (#35) and Billy Williams (#141).
